Winter barreled into Greene County this week. Volunteer weather observer John Beltz reported a high temperature of 59 degrees on Monday and a high of only 26 degrees on Tuesday, Veterans Day. The low temperature Nov. 14 was single digits — 6 degrees!
But, for those who can say nothing nicer about winter except that it doesn’t last forever, there’s good news. The Jefferson park and recreation department is already planning for the 2015 pool season.
JPRD director Vicky Lautner and the rest of the staff, along with the park and recreation commission, has started planning next year’s budget. Last year’s major project was the replacement of the large filters at a cost of more than $82,500. Lautner is grateful to the Greene County Community Foundation for its help in funding the filters.
This year, she hopes to have the pool professionally painted. The work would be done in September, immediately after the pool closes for the season. Lautner said the 76-year-old pool hasn’t been professionally painted since it was built. New paint has been applied by city crews, but the old paint has never been removed. As the layers have gotten thicker, they’re more prone to peeling, and each paint job lasts fewer years.
The estimate for having the pool acid-etched to remove the old paint and then put on new paint is $30,000. The project will be part of the budget considerations for FY 15-16.
